Sourcing International Fenestration for European Projects

Europe is a set of national markets that share a technical language but not a single approval route. Treating it as one jurisdiction is the fastest way to arrive at a package that satisfies nobody in particular.

One technical language, several jurisdictions

EN standards, CE marking and declarations of performance give European projects a shared vocabulary, but the values a project must achieve, the documentation it must hold and the party responsible for declaring it differ by country, building type and contract.

A manufacturer's documentation should therefore be read against the requirements of the specific destination country and project, not against a general claim of European acceptability. Reliance treats "European compliant" as an unverifiable statement and works instead from the named standards.

What to establish before award

The questions are the same across markets; only the answers change.

  • —Which EN standards and national provisions the project names
  • —What documentation the destination market requires and who must issue it
  • —Whether the manufacturer's evidence covers the specified configuration
  • —How the system will be installed, sealed and interfaced with the surrounding construction

Façade, glass and hardware are separate evidence trails

A façade package is assembled from framing, glass and hardware that may carry different documentation, issued by different parties, for different configurations. Verifying the framing while assuming the glass and hardware follow is how gaps reach submittal.

Logistics into European projects

Sea freight, customs clearance and inland distribution into European sites all affect the installation sequence. Packing, crating and consolidation should be specified for the product and the site, and shipments planned against the construction programme rather than the production calendar.
